Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first woman to be elected vice president and she also holds the title of highest-ranking female officer in the history of America. She is a part of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally, she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland and attended Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her first job was in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was the San Francisco district attorney. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010. In 2014, she was re-elected. Harris was the junior United States senator from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. She was a senator and campaigned for reforms to healthcare and federal cannabis de-scheduling. She also advocated for the possibility of citizenship for immigrants without a legal status, the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile due to her sharp questions of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of assault on a woman.
